Do not worry too much about the color or the look of the font. Just make sure that the font is professional and that it matches your format of choice.Using margins for a resume does not mean that you cannot design your own format. You can make use of the basic formats offered by Microsoft Word, but if you are looking for something unique, you can try a program like Microsoft Publisher. This will allow you to create templates and layouts for different formats, and you can even change the colors to fit the background color of your resume.
